Laser hair removal works wonderfully for many people — and less well for a few. Knowing which group you are in before you spend money saves disappointment. Here is an honest look at who makes a great candidate.
The ideal candidate
Classically, laser works best on dark hair because the laser targets pigment. If you have brown or black hair, you are an excellent candidate regardless of skin tone, provided the clinic uses the right technology for your skin.
Skin tone is no longer a barrier
It used to be that only fair skin could be treated. Modern dual-wavelength systems — especially the Nd:YAG wavelength — safely treat deeper and South Asian skin tones, which is great news for northeast Calgary’s diverse community. See our deeper-skin-tones guide.
Where laser struggles
- Grey, white, blonde or red hair — little pigment for the laser to target. Electrolysis is usually the better route; see laser vs alternatives.
- Very fine, light "peach fuzz" — limited response.
Special situations
- PCOS / hormonal hair growth: laser still helps a lot, but expect to need maintenance because hormones keep stimulating new follicles. This is common and very treatable — many of our clients manage hormonal facial and body hair this way.
- Pregnancy: most clinics defer treatment until after.
- Certain medications and conditions: always disclose these at your consultation.
The honest test
If you have dark hair, are bothered by shaving or waxing, and can commit to a full course and aftercare, you are very likely a strong candidate. The only way to know for sure is an assessment. Book a free consultation at Alyssum Laser in NE Calgary.
