Common mistakes that ruin Laser Hair Removal results

By Alyssum Laser · June 3, 2026 · 1 min read

Most laser "failures" are not the laser — they are avoidable mistakes. Sidestep these and you will get the result you paid for.

1. Waxing or plucking between sessions

The laser targets the hair root. Wax or pluck and you remove the very thing it needs — wasting the session. Only shave between appointments.

2. Skipping or stretching out sessions

Hair grows in cycles; correct spacing catches each follicle in its active phase. Inconsistent timing lets growth slip out of sync and drags out your course. Keep your schedule.

3. Sun and self-tanner

Tanned skin forces lower, less effective settings and raises the risk of pigment changes. Avoid sun and fake tan before and after each session, and wear SPF.

4. Choosing on price alone

An underpowered device or untrained operator means more sessions, weaker results and higher risk — not a saving. Judge on cost-per-result; see our cost guide and clinic checklist.

5. Wrong device for your skin tone

Deeper skin needs an Nd:YAG-capable laser and conservative settings. The wrong device risks burns or pigment changes — see our deeper skin tones guide.

6. Quitting too early

Results build across the full course. Stopping at session three leaves untreated follicles that regrow, then blaming the laser. Finish the plan.

7. Ignoring aftercare

Heat, friction and harsh actives right after a session can irritate skin. Follow the aftercare do’s and don’ts.

Do it right

Avoid these and laser delivers. Book a free consultation at Alyssum Laser in NE Calgary and we will keep you on the right track.

Frequently asked questions

Why didn’t my laser hair removal work?
The most common reasons are waxing/plucking between sessions, inconsistent spacing, sun exposure, quitting early, or a low-quality device or wrong wavelength for your skin tone — all avoidable.
Can I wax between laser sessions?
No. Waxing and plucking remove the follicle the laser targets. Only shave between sessions.
