A little preparation makes your laser session safer, more comfortable and more effective. Use this simple checklist before each appointment.
2–4 weeks before
- Stop waxing, plucking and threading. The laser needs the hair root in place; only shaving is allowed between sessions.
- Avoid sun and self-tanner on the area. Tanned skin limits safe settings and raises risk.
A few days before
- Pause strong actives (retinoids, strong acids) on the area if treating the face, as advised.
- Skip products that increase sensitivity if your technician recommends it.
The day before
- Shave the area 12–24 hours ahead so energy targets the follicle, not surface hair. Clean shave, no nicks.
The day of
- Arrive with clean skin — no lotions, deodorant (for underarms), makeup or oils on the area.
- Skip caffeine if you are sensitive, as it can heighten sensitivity.
- Wear comfortable clothing for the area being treated.
- Flag anything new — medications, sunburn, pregnancy, or skin changes.
If it is your first session
Expect a consultation and patch test. This is especially important for deeper skin tones — see our guide. Knowing what to expect helps; read what it feels like.
After your session
Follow the aftercare do’s and don’ts — sun protection and gentle skincare protect your results. Questions before your first visit? Book a consultation at Alyssum Laser in NE Calgary.
